Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of the manifestations of faith, both its external and internal types in the history of philosophical thought and at the present time. The authors examine the problem of understanding faith and knowledge as a manifestation of internal and external determinants, through the well-known concept of the Russian researcher D.I. Pivovarov. To concretize the concept of faith, the Russian thinker introduced two different types, based on the  distinguishing this term in English: faith and belief.

The authors, developing the ideas of the Russian thinker, present a distinction between two types of faith as internal and external determinants of the religious worldview. The first type - as faith - acts as an internal intuitive knowledge given from birth. The second type as belief - as an indirect way, sensory experience, based on belief in Authorities, trust in models. Based on the history of Western European philosophy and Arab-Muslim philosophy, the authors demonstrate how the relationship between the faith and belief in the religious worldview has changed in history. The author sconcludes that the orthodox, fundamental tendencies in religion place more emphasis on improving the belief, while the mystical and esoteric tendencies - on strengthening the faith.

Taking into account the concept of D.I. Pivovarov, the authors are convinced that faith and belief can be logically considered as internal and external determinants of a person's worldview.
