Abstract

The relevance and bias of the study of the problem of the formation of religious tolerance in the context of medieval culture are important not only for identifying the place and role of religion in the culture and life of people in the historical past but will also reveal the genesis of the formation and development of religious tolerance and intolerance. The formation of the idea of religious tolerance in medieval culture is due to specific historical socio-cultural, including religious reasons. Ancient philosophical thought played an important role in the formation of the idea of tolerance. The article reveals the influence of ancient thought on the formation of the idea of religious tolerance as one of the prerequisites. In this article, the authors analyze the formation of religious tolerance and intolerance in the context of medieval culture based on a comparative analysis of philosophical concepts.

The authors also tried to consider the philosophical and religious foundations of the formation of this idea in the context of identifying several aspects of Western European medieval culture in retrospect, such as the emergence of cities, trade, the emergence of financial elements, their influence on the organization of the crusades.

The authors of this article tried to identify the connections between philosophical and religious teachings, which consider the idea of religious tolerance, with the objective socio-cultural foundations in which these ideas originated, which makes it possible to determine some aspects of religious tolerance and intolerance in the context of medieval Western culture.
